Field Trip...

My book club went on a field trip yesterday to the site of the deadliest avalanche in US history.
The White Cascade - by Gary Krist

"In 1910, a monstrous, record-breaking blizzard hit the NW. Nowhere was the danger more terrifying than near a tiny town called Wellington, perched high in the Cascade Mountains, where a desperate situation evolved; two trainloads of cold, hungry passengers and their crews found themselves marooned. For days, an army of Great Northern Railroad's most dedicated men struggled to rescue the trains, but just when escape seemed possible, the unthinkable occurred-a colossal avalanche tumbled down, sweeping the trains over the steep slope and down the mountainside. Centered on the astonishing spectacle of our nation's deadliest avalanche..."

The first tunnel

Entering the concrete snowshed. It's almost a 1/2 mile long...kind of spooky.

The exit of the snowshed rapidly deteriorating.
After our adventure we had lunch at Gustov's in Leavenworth.
Such a fun way to spend a fall day...oh, I rhymed:)
